The Plant Model
From Mailbox 1999-2000 Yearbook page 177
Follow the directions to make a 3-D model showing all the parts of a flowering plant.
Materials
cornmeal:
pollen
Toilet paper Tube: Stem
ruler
five 3-inch lengths of string: Roots
tape
2 straws
scissors
one 9" x 12" construction paper red: petals
glue
one 9" x 12" construction paper green: sepals
pencil
0ne 15" pipe cleaner green
0ne 15" pipe cleaner yellow
Directions
1. Cut a 4 1/2" x 6" piece of grren construction paper
2. Tape this piece around the tube.
3. Tape the 5 pieces of string so they dangle from the bottom of the tube.
4. Cut the 2 straws ythe same length as the tube.
5. Tape the straws inside the tube
6. Fold the remaing green construction paper in half.
7. Draw the pattern of the sepals on the folded piece of green construction paper.

8. Cut out the green sepals.
9. Fold the red construction paper in fourths.
10. Draw the petal pattern on the folded piece of red construction paper.

11. Cut out the 4 red petals.
12. Tape the sepals under the petals so the green leaves of the sepals show between the
red petals.
13. Fold the petals slightly upward so they appear to stand up by gently rolling them on
your pencil.
14. Cut the yellow pipe cleaner in 3-inch lengths.
15. Cut a 3-inch length from the gree pipe cleaner.
16. Make a small hole in the center of the petals and sepals.
17. Push the pipe cleaner pieces through the hole so the green piece is surrounded by the
yellow ones.
18. Twist the bottoms of the pipe cleaners together to hold them in place under the
sepals.
19. Bend the yello pipe cleaners slightly to make them fan out.
20. Tape the petals and sepals to the top of the tube.
21. Cut 2 leaves from the scraps of the green construction paper.
22. Draw veins on the leaves.
23. Tape the 2 leaves to the sides of the tube.
24. Place a dab of glue at the end of each stamen (yellow pipe cleaner)
25. Sprinkle pollen (corn meal) on the glue.
Fuzzy Bee
1. Wind a black pipe cleaner around a 2.5 cm yellow pom-pom.
2. Use a white pipe cleaner to shape wings into a figure eight.
3. Glue wax paper on the wings. Trim off any excess from around the edges of the pipe
cleaner.
4. Attach the wings to the body with a small piece of white pipe cleaner.
5. Using black pipe cleaners, make the feet for the bee.
6. You now have a pollinator to be used in your demonstration of pollination!
1. Introduce the terms pollen and pollination. Sprinkle fine- ground yellow corn meal on the stamens of your flower. The corn meal represents pollen.
2. Using the Fuzzy Bee, touch the bee's feet and legs to the top of the pollen-covered stamens.
3. Look for pollen that has stuck to the bee's feet.
4. Demonstrate that when the bee flies to the next flower, some of the pollen is dropped onto that flower's pistil. This is called pollination and it needs to happen for a flower to make a seed (this leads nicely into a lesson on life cycle).
