| 43 AD | King
Caratacus I was the King of one of the British tribes. They were called the Catuvellauni. They tried to stop the Romans taking over Britain. Caratacus led the British fight for eight years, but we were beaten in the end. Caratacus was taken in chains to Rome, the capital of the Roman Empire. Caratacus thought he was going to be killed or kept in prison. He would not bow or beg for mercy. Caratacus told the Roman Emperor that it was right to fight. He was so impressed, he let me go. Caratacus was not allowed back into Britain. Caratacus lived in Rome for the rest of my life. |
| 60 AD | Boudicca I
was the Queen of a British tribe called the Iceni. Her husband was King Prasutagus. The Romans let us rule over our own lands. In return, we gave them money and did not cause any trouble. In AD 60, Prasutagus died. The Romans treated Boudicca horribly and tried to take all my lands. She fought back. She led an army that destroyed Roman cities and armies. Boudicca very nearly chased the Romans out of Britain. In the last battle her armies were destroyed. Boudicca escaped. Boudicca would not let the Romans capture me, so she took poison and died |

the Romans strong men set themselves up as local rulers or kings. They ruled small regions, the size of modern counties. They might have an old Roman town at the centre. |

| Angles, Saxons and Jutes unite to become Anglo-Saxons. | |

| 425 AD | Government of Britain agreed for Vortigern becoming ruler of England. |

Germanus visits Britain. He was the Bishop of Auxerre in Gaul (now called France). |
| Britain
was being attacked by the Saxons, Picts, and Scots. They asked the Roman Consul for help. None came. Vortigern hires mercenaries to fight. He gave them land as pay. Saxons settled in Kent. This made the people unhappy. People in Britain then joined a group who didn't want Vortigern as their King. They chose a man named Ambrosius as their leader. A civil war broke out in Britain. Ambrosius's followers defeated Vortigern's army. Vortigern hid in one of his castles but it was set on fire and he burnt to death! |

| Saxons
rule Kent. In Germany and Denamrk the sea was flooding the land. More Saxons immigrated to Britain. Ambrosius seems to have ruled Britain as High-King. He was unable to stop the Saxons taking over parts of his country. Britains began leaving their towns. Local kings moved by to hilltop forts. Legends tell that Ambrosius was succeeded by his brother, Uther. Uther was succeeded by his son, Arthur. |

Edwin was
born. He was Prince of Deira. (part of Northumberland) His father had been killed by the Bernicans. The Berican King exiled him. As an adult he gathered an army and took back Northumberia. Edwin became a Christian. His powerful armies took over British kingdoms, like Elmet and South Rheged. |
| 597 AD | Pope Gregory sends mission of 41 monks from Rome to England. |
| 605 AD | Oswald
born. He was a Prince of Bernicia. Bernica was part of Northumberland. He helped the Irishman, St. Aidan, set up the monastery at Lindisfarne. |
| 633 AD | King
Cadwallon of Gwynedd (in Wales) & King Penda of Mercia attack Edwin. Edwin is killed. Oswald becomes King. |
| 641 AD | Oswald
killed. Oswiu became King after Oswald. |
| 655 AD | The
Mercians took over Northumbria in AD 655. King Penda was killed. |
| 664 AD | In AD 664,
there was a big argument about when people should celebrate Easter. The Roman Catholic way won. |
| 672-735 | Bede I was
an Anglo-Saxon. He was born in northeast England and lived most of my life in a monastery. The monastery had a big library of books and I read them all. Bede was one of the most learned men in Europe. He gave his life to educating others. I wrote more than 40 books. My most famous book was the first history of the English people. The stories that people know about early English history come from my book. |
