| PRINCES OF NOVGOROD |
Princes of Novgorod Historical Atlas Novgorod was an important
trade centre and a military stronghold, which was conquered by the Swedish
viking Rurik c. 862. Rurik became the founder of the first Russians state
and the dynasty which would rule Russia until the end of the 16th century.

The Viking Rurik was the founder
of the Russian State, or the first Russian monarchy.

Russia Before 1917
Before 1917 a Danish Viking named Rurik
settled in Novgorod. Rurik became ruler in 862A.D. When Rurik came to Russia
he found Slavic-speaking farmers and hunters. He united these tribes into a
single, well-organized government. |
