Sargon I
Sargon ruled area known as Akkad   Map p.62
He conquered the Sumer city-states in 2350 B.C.
Became king of Sumer and Akkad.
Sargon based his empire in the city of Akkad
This was the first Empire, all territory under one ruler.
It lasted 100 years.
Akkadan became the language.
Akkadians worshipped Sumerian gods and used their writing.

HAMMURABI

Hammurabi of Babylon
1792-1750BC
1800 B.C. Sargon died and the city-states rose to power.
Hammurabi born 1750 BC (1792-1750 BC)
Amorites settled in the Fertile Crescent built Babylon.
Hammurabi conquered Sumer and Akkad.
Expansion of rule to the Mediterranean Sea
Babylonians adopted  the language and the Sumerian and Akkadian gods.
Gave the gods Babylonian names.
Babylon was an important trading center.

Hammurabi's Accomplishments
Improved the irrigation system.
Reorganized tax system
Began government housing program
Raised the god of Babylon above all gods.
Code of law.
Approved royal judges.
Hammurabi's reign was the Golden Age of Babylon.
